Work Cards

Back in the late 60's, Wills and Hepworth came up with a brilliant way to capitalise on all their books by devising Ladybird Work Cards for English and Comprehension study. The cards consisted of a classic ladybird picture lifted straight from a previously published ladybird book, a short paragraph describing the story or event, and overleaf, comprehension questions, beginning; "Write the answers in your book NOT ON THIS CARD"! There were five questions which checked understanding of the main information, plus a couple of "can you do these" ideas for extra research and an activity or two.

The cards came in a flattish box, labelled on the side. Completion of one card per day was compulsory at many junior school, otherwise no playtime. Wills and Hepworth must have been very pleased with themselves, since the expense to produce the cards must have been minimal, and it was also great self-promotion, since at the end of most cards it tells children to "now go and read a book about …….." and whatever the subject, Ladybird had written it.

The "English" cards are divided into two sets, the second set containing work of a slightly higher standard. The others were released as a 1st set only, unless you know otherwise. Subjects included Nature, History and Science. Each set is divided into a combination of Red, Yellow, Green, Blue Cards.

If anyone has a spare set of workcards, please get in contact. Thanks to Jenni Shand & Steve Rudge for additional info.
