In 1967, Wellings teamed up with EMI's budget label MFP (Music For Pleasure) and the concept of the covers album was developed.

Hits 67 was the first, followed by several more using the word Hits in the title: Super Hits, Hit Hits, Hits Again etc. Wellings produced over 70 cover albums for MFP. His biggest-seller, Lennon & McCartney Tijuana-style, sold over 340,000 copies in the UK.

Most were sold in bookshops, supermarkets and stationers. Few purchasers could afford 6 singles, but they could afford a budget priced cover hits LP.

They were recorded quickly (they had to be), and released every couple of months. Wellings would listen to the original record, pick a suitable session singer, allocate the instrumentalists then get his arranger to works out the arrangement from the original record.

Most tracks were chosen 10 days before the recording, a few were left until the last moment to ensure they were as up to date as possible..
